Follow Righteous Rod

Alright I’m going to take this moment to talk about Righteous Rod. I first met Righteous Rod at the Hip Hop For Flint Charity Concert. The dude was really energetic and really enthused about his set. I have to say he gave an amazing performance. This is especially true, given the fact that there were technical difficulties at the event. This prevented the music from playing properly while he was performing. The dude still killed it, energetic and keyed into his performance.

I ended up listening to Rod’s music on soundcloud, and I was really impressed by what I heard. What impressed me about him the most is how many different styles the guy raps in. I myself like changing up my flow and cadence, so I really give out props to other artist for being able to do that. I really do like that the songs I’ve heard from him so far.

Rod has a track called “Respek”. This song reminds me of something someone like Drake would release. The track is really boastful and is a reference back to the now infamous Birdman incident involving himself and Charlemagne (Put some respek on my name). Technically speaking the interview as on the Breakfast Club, but RJ jokes with me that its basically the Charlemagne‘s show, so that’s the way I’m going to refer to it.

Getting back to the track. The track is really funny and clever. The song is about putting some Respek on Righteous Rod‘s name. He is really witty and clever on this track, with a little bit of a gangster attitude.

Rod has a track called “This is It”. The track is a really soulful moment for Rod and it stands out from all the songs I heard for that reason. He is singing a very melodious song, about trying to get his money together and ball out. Though he does have some second thoughts about whether the money being made is worth the risks. Also Righteous Rod has concerns in the song that he going thought to make it.  A short and  interesting track, definitely worth a listen.

Then we can look at a track from Rod like “Underwater“. This song reminds me of something an Issahia Reshad would release. Here Rod is really venting out his emotions on this slow serine beat with a heavy kick pattern. Here we see Rod bring out a very melodious character to his voice on his song. We see him doubling up the vocals and really giving the track a lot of character. The style and the cadence the lyrics are performed in, are really catchy and infectious. The song is smooth and  I really enjoyed this track.

The last track I’m going to talk about is a tack called “Slippin“. I saw this as an interesting concept track if I’m interpreting this correctly. I feel like Righteous Rod is reflecting on the people he has lost. Those are the people you could say “got caught slippin‘ “. Though Rod‘s people are dead and gone, he still feels the pain of them being gone. In some ways they keep on living in Rod’s memory. I really see this track as Rod trying to come to terms with his decisions, and this slow sleepy track seems to convey his sense of loss.

Overall I feel like Righteous Rod is a really solid artist. His music is constantly quality, and I will be looking forward to checking out anything he releases going into the future.
